Mission San Francisco
Mission San Francisco de Solano was the last mission to be built, it is the mission farthest north. It was founded by father Altimira, who believed that the mission was needed to keep the Russians at Fort Ross from claiming any more land in California.

California Missions Foundation

Alta California was founded July 4, 1823. Founded by Father Jos? Altim?ra, it was the twenty-first, and last, mission to be established. It was named for Saint Francis Solanus, missionary to the Indians of Peru.
